Vandaag is het precies 50 jaar geleden dat de Afro-Amerikaanse schrijver en dichter Langston Hughes overleed. Hij was een sleutelfiguur binnen de Harlem Renaissance in de jaren dertig en ook politiek ge├źngageerd binnen de zwarte burgerbeweging. Zijn literaire doorbraak bij een jazzminnend publiek kwam er in de jaren vijftig wanneer hij aansluiting vond bij The Beat Generation. We laten Langston zelf aan het woord, samen met Henry "Red" Allen, Charles Mingus en Randy Weston. Met deze laatste schreef hij een suite 'Uhuru Afrika' (Freedom, Africa!), een meesterwerk dat u integraal te horen krijgt. Hoewel Langston Hughes een intense relatie met Duke Ellington onderhield, bleef een samenwerking uit. Hughes raakte echter totaal ontroerd door Ellingtons Carnegie Hall concert (1943) waar een eerste uitvoering van Black, Brown and Beige op het programma stond.
